Major League Baseball changed the format for the Homerun Derby and it didn't disappoint. The All Star Game kept the same rules, but it didn't disappoint either. Both took place in Cincinnati, Ohio, at Great American Ballpark, the stadium where the Reds Play. During the Home Run Derby, the MLB had planned on giving each batter 5 minutes (as opposed to 10 outs), but the rainy weather cut the time to 4 minutes. Bonus time (30 seconds) could be earned by reaching specified home run distances, and the two time periods added together resulted in a perfect amount of total time. Another new aspect of the Derby was a tournament bracket instead of a group, which advanced the top half of the sluggers.

Four years ago the FIFA Women's Championship Game featured the United States and Japan, where Japan edged the US in penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie. This week the two face off again in the finals. The two soccer teams have had great success, even with the high level of hype. The fact these teams reached the finals last time will make the hype around this game even higher.
The United States won two games and tied a game in their group, but Japan has won every match this World Cup. The US defeated Colombia, China and Germany to advance to the finals. Japan won against the Netherlands, Australia and England by one point in each match.
The German and English soccer teams will play for third place. What do you think will happen in these matches?

FIFA (Federation International de Fútbol Association) has been in the headlines worldwide recently and it's not just about soccer. First, several high ranking officials are accused or suspected of corruption, bribery and misappropriation of funds. Of these include FIFA's President Sepp Blatter, who was reelected despite the many pressures against him. However, it didn't take long for him to step down. Blatter, a native Swiss, has been with FIFA for decades1. He reportedly bought votes and has been involved in numerous suspicious activities over the years, including embezzlement. He won reelection against Jordanian candidate Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein. Тhe date for the new election to replace Blatter will be decided in July.2 The Women's World Cup is currently being played in Canada, and the next Men's World Cup will be in Russia in 2018, followed by Qatar in 2022.

I learned a lot about compassion recently, and this Memorial Day weekend provides us with a big chance to show compassion. 1As this video so strongly portrays, we all have trials. Although we often cannot understand what other people go through, our prayers and kindness can go a long ways to help others, including families of fallen veterans or those who were or are currently serving in the armed forces.
A few weeks ago I had the chance to have a good chat with somebody I didn't get along with very well. They came across as impatient and bad tempered. But I learned things about this person that helped me to understand them better. It made all the difference, and things immediately improved between us. The experience helped me to learn that if you don't like or don't get along with someone, perhaps you need to get to know them better. It helped me to open my eyes and realize that all of us need to be better understood. Whether someone has conflicting interests or is completely different than you, everybody is imperfect and deserves to be understood, even if people appear to be perfect. Instead of assuming a person is nothing but a jerk or loser, we would do well to notice their other underlying qualities. It makes life easier for everyone.
Make Memorial Day something more than hotdogs and hamburgers (although, yes they are delicious). Remember our fallen heroes, "mourn with those that mourn... and comfort those that stand in need of comfort."3 That is the best way to enjoy Memorial Day weekend and life in general.

The BYU Baseball team might or might not remember the beginning of the 2015 season. It was not a pretty sight. The team dug a deep hole, losing ten of its first twelve games, though against talented teams. But as soon as the team played its first home series against Hartford (three weeks into the season), the team revived itself in a remarkable way. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the tremendous success that BYU Baseball ended up having, despite their very tumultuous start.
My BYU Baseball Preview predicted the team to have a 29-22 (16-12 West Coast Conference) record and reach the 2015 postseason, but the odds of that happening dropped considerably before the team even played any double digit games. BYU currently stands at 28-23 (16-11) and did end up clinching a spot in the WCC Tournament. Much of the media expected BYU to finish near the very bottom of the WCC, but my honest insights saw a much better team. That's proven to be the case, and more especially so based on the fact that the team has overcome so much adversity. BYU played most of their last games in rainy weather, and the last home game was canceled due to rain. But the team responded well, sinking Saint Mary's and Utah, and clinching the postseason at Santa Clara. Whatever happens this postseason, Cougar Baseball can celebrate. They've earned it after they have put up with some heavy downpours.

Kris Bryant pounds a home run over the center field stands and then circles the bases for the second time of the game. Hitting home runs is becoming a routine for him, where he had totaled 9 in just 28 at bats, and has had three multi-homerun games in this year's spring training. Bryant is just one of the many talented options the Cubs organization has, and the ball club is prepared for a big turn around in 2015. The Cubs are joined by other teams that have lacked success in recent years, but should have more success this year. This includes the Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, Chicago White Sox, etc. In fact, this could be the first time in who knows how many years that both Chicago teams make the playoffs. I actually expect most of the aforementioned teams to finish in the top three spots of their respective divisions (with the White Sox and the Padres reaching the Playoffs as a Wildcard). Only the Padres finished in the top three spots of the division last year, at third.
On the other hand, traditional powerhouse teams like the Yankees and Braves are not being considered as serious contenders for the playoffs. The Mets just might be the kings of New York this year (who could also perhaps contend for an NL Wildcard position). Based on the trend in recent years, the Saint Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants have dominated the NL Playoffs. Thus, the Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are the most likely teams to reach the World Series. The two met in 2013 and the Red Sox came away victorious. Each team has great talent again, but several questions. The Cardinals won't have a cake walk to the NL Division Title, as
the Pittsburgh Pirates have the capacity to win a lot of games. Also, the Cardinals will probably be challenged in the playoffs by the Nationals out east and the Dodgers out west. Each team is ridiculously good. I think the work that the Dodgers have put in will finally pay off with a trip to the World Series. The American League East probably isn't going to be quite as strong as it traditionally is, which leaves Boston as the favorite here. The Rays and the aforementioned Yankees are probably going to finish in the bottom half. The Blue Jays improved this year, but it may not be enough to win the division. Baltimore fields a good squad, but repeating last year's success will be difficult with the loss of Nelson Cruz to the Mariners. Boston's biggest challenge in the Playoffs would probably come from a west coast team: the Angels or the aforementioned Mariners.
I expect Boston to reach the World Series against the Dodgers, with the Dodgers on top. It'll be intriguing to see how the Royals are this year. They had great support from the nation last year as they finally entered the playoffs again, quickly meeting up with the Giants in the World Series, where San Francisco won it all. Kansas City lost some key players, such as designated hitter Billy Butler. Regarding the Giants, the team will probably take a step back in 2015, partly because they lost some talent to Boston.

There is a time for everything. Technological devices have so many benefits and provide us with so many opportunities that they are often unavoidable. Unfortunately, these devices have many subtle, negative effects, and we may hardly even recognize them.
Several years ago, a friend said that her life was literally saved, simply because a by passer at school noticed her stressed state and reached out. This story, along with other realizations I've had, drove me to write this piece to get people to unplug themselves from their devices more often, especially when being with people.
Why?
The former story illustrates how much a small thing can do. To a degree, we're all responsible to look out for others. But we should also do it because we want to. A lot of people do put on headphones to purposely cut out contact with the world. When we do this, we have essentially already set ourself to fail in our duties that day to love one another and think about others. Like I said, there is a time for everything, including listening to headphones. But I promise that the people you walk by every day are much more important than the music you are listening to every day on the way to school or work--and have probably already heard dozens of times anyways. Obviously, I also realize that many people listen to other audio, such as pod-casts, scriptures, etc.
Sometimes it's dangerous to be completely zoned into whatever we are doing on our devices. Not being able to hear what happens outside of our headphones has caused wrecks and other incidents (not to mention harming our ears if the music is too loud). I see lots of people riding bikes with headphones on, and many times lacking awareness and narrowly avoiding wrecks. Furthermore, they don't even wear a helmet. "Be wise, what more can I say?"
You could miss out on meeting important people. Obviously we are missing out on potential opportunities to enter into a relationship when we are oblivious to who and what is around us. And if we're married we can still speak with people that can help us in other ways, such as sharing knowledge about our career path, or inspiring us with a life story. Maybe you would benefit from sharing a life lesson with someone else.

Me salvé por un pelo este torneo. No sólo llegaron los equipos de BYU y Boise State al torneo, sino que evitan enfrentarse, a pesar de hallarse en uno de dos partidos con equipos de la mismaclasificación (#11). ¿He mencionado que 11 es un número de la suerte en Boise?

Thanks to a win at Gonzaga, Collinsworth's triple double record and Tyler Haws's all time scoring record, BYU fans should remember this year for a long time. Derrick Marks, who shoots almost 50% from the field, was key in guiding this year's squad from Boise, which had a pretty strong start and finish to the season (in the middle of the season they lost 4 games in a row due to the injury of Anthony Drmic).

Me decidí en escribir este después de (repetidamente) oírle decir alguna chica que a ella cierto tipo no le cae bien porque ella cree que él no tiene confianza suficiente. Eso me bastó. Mi esperanza es que por lo menos una persona beneficie en este. Juzgar a los demás según cuan seguros que te parezcan es injusto. Mira además del semblante para ver las buenas cualidades que tiene la gente. En vez de desatender a alguien y degradarlo, ampáralo. Puede efectuar la diferencia.
La confianza aproxima y se va según el lugar y tiempo. Todos tenemos situaciones de confianza abundante, y otras con una falta de la misma. Algunos tienen confianza durante exámenes del cálculo, pero no tanto durante una cita. Otros son opuestos.

Just about all of us have heard the phrase "Fake it til you make it." Sounds like good advice, right? Well, maybe sometimes... The problem with this is it encourages people to not be themselves, and is, well... fake. We all want to be successful, happy and recognized. We all want to be with that perfect person. But in reality everyone is flawed, and we need to accept that and see the best in others. Of course we should believe in ourselves and try to improve, but some people think so highly of themselves (sometimes in order to impress people) that they act like the world revolves around them. And then many others follow along so they don't look bad. You can call this a "social arms race."
The way many parts of society perceives introverts is a problem. Many who aren't "outgoing" are shunned. Introverts have their own set of strengths, often less external. For instance, refusing to get even with someone (although tempting) can show greater strength than people who are quick to fight back.
I decided to write this after (again and again) hearing several girls say they don't like a certain guy because she doesn't think he has enough confidence; I've frankly heard enough. My hope is that at least one person benefits from this. Judging others by how confident they seem to you is wrong.
We don't know what people are going through. Look past the surface to see good qualities people have. Rather than
neglecting someone and making things worse for them, support them. It makes a difference.
Confidence comes and goes in different aspects of life.Everyone has situations where they are confident, and other situations where they are not. Some people have confidence during calculus tests, but not as much when it comes to dating. Other people are just the opposite. It's great if a person feels good about themselves most of the time, but don't demand that it be a piece of cake for everyone else. We all have distinct weaknesses, and we need to be open with others rather than bottle ourselves up and pretend everything is dandy. This hinders us in being able to
serve others, since so many of us "look" like we're doing fine.
The Atonement of Jesus Christ helps us to overcome weaknesses, but not all our problems will go away in this life. Have patience, including with yourself, and reach out to help others more often. Everyone will make it by being their best self. I promise.

Head Coach Mike Littlewood had a great first year in 2013, leading the BYU Cougars Baseball team to a 32-21 record. Last year things weren't as smooth and the team had a reversed record, 22-31. While the media expects BYU to finish 7th in the conference, BYU has the potential to finish much higher.
Tanner Chauncey and Kolton Mahoney return after being selected in the MLB Draft. The talented Jarvis Jones and Dillon Robinson return at catcher and first, respectively. The team has nice depth at several positions, including but not limited to catcher, shortstop and pitcher. Several of BYUs pitchers can throw in the 90s. Coach Littlewood said this year there were "no team captains" selected, since the team leadership is so strong. One of his principle goals is "to get to Regionals" this year. Brigham Young University (BYU) has now been independent in football for four years. Although at a glance you can see there was no eye-catching record or top 10 win in any of those years, I think Independence is still working out fairly well. Allow me to explain.
It seems to me that Independence is more about the experience, and less about the results. Sure, losing games dims that experience, but playing at Notre Dame and Wisconsin in the same season is special for most programs. While there are downsides, such as long travels and no conference championships, BYU gets to play in every region of the U.S. almost each year of independence. In the 2014 regular season BYU played in Connecticut, Texas, Idaho, Florida, Tennessee and California. This not only enriches the experience for coaches and players, but also the BYU fan-base nationwide. Don't get me wrong, a Big XII Invite would have its perks, but mixing up opponents for the schedule each year is an exceptional spot to be in. In 2015 BYU will get to play at Nebraska, at UCLA, at Michigan, and at an NFL stadium in Kansas City. The team will also play games against LSU and USC in the future. BYU's Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has done a superb job.
I started to be fascinated with the idea of having a tournament in College football about six years ago, and it's finally here. The first year of the College Football Playoffs couldn't have turned out much better. Although there was controversy about TCU's exclusion and Ohio State's inclusion in the Playoff, the new system already seems to be pretty satisfactory. Ohio State went beyond stating itself as a contender, thrashing Wisconsin and beating number one Alabama. Ohio State had to overcome more than one major challenge this season. They lost two of their top quarterbacks and still managed to be ranked number four. However, what's good about the College Football Playoffs is that there are more opportunities for more teams. With the BCS System, Alabama and Florida State would have probably played for the championship. Although it would sure be nice to add more teams, four teams is two times better than two. Oregon had some problems this year, but quite a bit less. QB Marcus Mariota won the Heisman Trophy. Arizona was triumphant the first time against Oregon, but Oregon easily beat Arizona the second time. Oregon dominated and controlled the second half of the first Playoff game against Florida State, and won 59-20. In the Championship Game Oregon scored first, but Ohio State put up a 14 point lead. Oregon came back, but Ohio State won 42-20. Mariota still hasn't made his decision regarding the NFL Draft.

FIFA (Federation International de Fútbol Association) has been in the headlines worldwide recently and it's not just about soccer. First, several high ranking officials are accused or suspected of corruption, bribery and misappropriation of funds. Of these include FIFA's President Sepp Blatter, who was reelected despite the many pressures against him. However, it didn't take long for him to step down. 
A few weeks ago I had the chance to have a good chat with somebody I didn't get along with very well. They came across as impatient and bad tempered. But I learned things about this person that helped me to understand them better. It made all the difference, and things immediately improved between us.

The BYU Baseball team might or might not remember the beginning of the 2015 season. It was not a pretty sight. The team dug a deep hole, losing ten of its first twelve games, though against talented teams. But as soon as the team played its first home series against Hartford (three weeks into the season), the team revived itself in a remarkable way. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the tremendous success that BYU Baseball ended up having, despite their very tumultuous start.
