MLB Season Preview 2014

Major League Baseball's 2014 Season is probably going to be the most competitive season in years. Most of the league's teams appear to have a lot of bright spots in 2014. Admittedly, the season has already started, but it's still early enough to preview the year!

American League:

Top American League Contenders:

New York Yankees- Derek Jeter returns for his last year, and the team should be set to make it a good one. The additions of Carlos Beltran and the new Japanese ace pitcher Tanaka should be enough to make up for the loss of Robinson Cano and a few other players.
Detroit Tigers- Prince Fielder left Detroit for the Rangers, but the Tigers are still in great shape offensively, and their pitching staff is talented.
Texas Rangers- The Rangers could have a hard time winning their division, which got better with the added power the Mariners gained. The team is quite capable, but may need improved pitching to get it done.
Boston Red Sox- The defending World Series Champions should still be very good, but a repeat is unlikely with the tough American League East competition and loss of a few players. The Yankees were weaker last year and will present a challenge to Boston in 2014.

East Division:

New York Yankees:
The Yankees will have some tough competition, but have a shot to win the AL East with Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, etc.

Boston Red Sox:
Ryan Dempster's announcement that he will rest this year is a tough one for the team. Additionally, losing Jacoby Ellsbury to the Yankees will affect Boston.

Tampa Bay Rays:
The Rays are Playoff Contenders like usual, with David Price leading the talented pitching staff and Evan Longoria as one of the stars on the offense.

Baltimore Orioles:
The Orioles have improved, but they will definitely need to prove that they can again compete in the division. Chris Davis has become one of the most dangerous hitters in the country.

Toronto Blue Jays:
They have a load of talent, but it hasn't produced much in recent years. Due to problems they've had in the past, they are placed at the bottom of the division.

Central:

Detroit Tigers Prince Fielder left, but Detroit still has tons of offensive talent and excellent pitchers.

Cleveland Indians
Perhaps the Indians are going to miss Ubaldo Jimenez, but they are still going to have the strength to contend for the Playoffs.

Kansas City Royals
The Royals have improved little by little, and the Indians should be mindful of the possible threat from Kansas City. The addition of Omar Infante could be enough to guide the team towards the Playoffs.

Minnesota Twins
The Twins improved with some additions, but it will not be enough to exit the bottom of the division.

Chicago White Sox
Expectations aren't very high here, but en some ways they have the potential to reach .500%. The team is excited about the addition of Jose Abreu.

West:

Texas Rangers
Texas can keep one of the most powerful offenses, but its pitchers need to play strong.

Oakland Athletics
The Athletics do have an opportunity to win the division for the third time in a row, but they don't appear to be the division favorites when compared with the Rangers.

Anaheim Angels
The Angels have a bunch of talent that hasn't produced in recent years. The pieces are there for a Playoff birth.

Seattle Mariners
The Mariners signed Robinson Cano for hundreds of millions of dollars. Many analysts think that this team has the potential to surprise many people.

Houston Astros
Houston did improve a bit during the off season, but is probably going to stay in the AL West basement.

National League:

Top National League Contenders:

Los Angeles Dodgers- While the team is in no way invincible, they have the pieces to make a nice run at reaching the World Series. Their pitching staff is stacked and the offense should do wonders. If the team can't handle entering the season as favorites, they could take a plummet, especially with questions regarding team chemistry.
Saint Louis Cardinals- Most people expect the Cardinals to once again make the World Series. With the loss of David Freeze and Carlos Beltran, questions lurk on the offensive side. Regardless of the offense, the superb pitchers should be enough to carry this team into the Playoffs.
Washington Nationals- The team was highly favored last year, but injuries just kept them out of contention. After a sub-par start, they were able to finish strong, which should help them in 2014. Sooner or later, Bryce Harper is anticipated to have a monster season, which should pull the team back into the Playoffs.
San Francisco Giants- They had a rough season in 2013, but this is basically the same team that won the World Series in 2010 and 2012. Don't be surprised if they make another climb to the Playoffs this year.

East:

Washington Nationals:
With former Tiger pitcher Doug Fister on an already very talented team, the Nationals are in a great position this year.

Atlanta Braves
The Braves lost catcher Brian McCann to the Yankees, so we'll see the result of his departure. The team maintains a roster full of promising pitchers.

New York Mets
Curtis Granderson switched to the other side of New York to join the Mets. Without Matt Harvey, it's doubted that the Mets can challenge the Braves or Nationals.

Philadelphia Phillies
The team is good but seems to need better younger players.

Miami Marlins

The Marlins seek to not have the worst record in the MLB. I think they can do it!

Central:

Saint Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals will need to adjust to the loss of David Freese and Carlos Beltran. They should still win their division, but might need to pickup their offense to win the World Series.

Cincinnati Reds
Arroyo left, but the team still has players capable of filling that position. They have a superb infield, lead by Joey Votto at First.

Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates had a lot of success in 2013 and made the Playoffs. Andrew McKutchen is a valuable player and another good performance on his part this year would place Pittsburgh in another march towards the Playoffs.

Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan Braun is a powerful hitter and new additions could instill new energy into the team. It will be difficult to challenge the other division contenders.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs probably won't make much noise this year, yet again. But the younger player development appears to have a lot of talent that will make a difference in the future.

West

Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers are again in good position to at least win the division, even though it won't be simple. I pick them to win the World Series over the Yankees.

San Francisco Giants
The Giants weren't impressive most of 2013, but the team is capable of coming back this time. They should contend for the playoffs.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona made some changes and has a chance at the Playoffs with Mark Trumbo and Bronson Arroyo.

Colorado Rockies
Todd Helton has retired but the team should at least still improve a little. Their pitchers are still the weak point, but with consistency and good health from Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, the offense could carry Colorado in the upper positions of the division.

San Diego Padres
Even the Padres have a lot of potential to contend for the Playoffs. Their problem is a tougher division based on off season changes, which might put them at the bottom of the NL West.
