The World Cup: What you probably didn't know

If you haven't already heard, the FIFA World Cup starts on June 12 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Last week I came across some interesting facts about FIFA that should surprise both soccer and non-soccer fans alike:

  • The first World Cup Match was in 1930 between Mexico and France in Uruguay.
  • Brazil has finished in the top 10 in every World Cup since 1970 (11 World Cups in a row), and has finished in the top six since 1994 (won World Cup two times in that time frame).
  • A host team has never lost its first match.
  • Turkey holds the record for the fastest goal scored in a game (11 seconds in 2002).
  • The highest scoring match in the World Cup totaled 12 points (Australia 7 - Switzerland 5, 1954).
  • Two people have won the Cup as both a player and coach (Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer).

Who do you think wins the 2014 World Cup?
