Los equipos de BYU y Boise State se meten en el Torneo NCAA

Me salvé por un pelo este torneo. No sólo llegaron los equipos de BYU y Boise State al torneo, sino que evitan enfrentarse, a pesar de hallarse en uno de dos partidos con equipos de la misma clasificación (#11). ¿He mencionado que 11 es un número de la suerte en Boise?  

Este año es la primera vez desde 2013 que los equipos juegan en el torneo NCAA. Gracias a una victoria en Gonzaga, una marca (récord) triple-doble por Collinsworth y una de puntuación de todos los tiempos por Tyler Haws, los aficionados de BYU recordarán de este año durante mucho tiempo. Derrick Marks, quien casi tira 50% de sus tiros de la cancha, fue clave en guiar a este escuadrón de Boise, el que fuerte inició y terminó la temporada (en el medio de la temporada perdieron 4 partidos al hilo debido a la lesión de Anthony Drmic).

I dodged a few bullets with this year's NCAA Basketball Tournament. Not only did BYU (25-9) and Boise State (25-8)  make the playoff field, but they avoid playing each-other, despite being in one of two play-in games involving the exact same seed (#11). And did I mention that #11 is a lucky number in Boise?

This marks the first time since 2013 that the teams have made the NCAA Tournament. Thanks to a win at Gonzaga, Collinsworth's triple double record and Tyler Haws's all time scoring record, BYU fans should remember this year for a long time. Derrick Marks, who shoots almost 50% from the field, was key in guiding this year's squad from Boise, which had a pretty strong start and finish to the season (in the middle of the season they lost 4 games in a row due to the injury of Anthony Drmic).

En un mundo perfecto, cada uno los logros magníficos de una persona resultarían en más respeto y elogio para con ésta. A veces le carece del elogio adecuado.

Tal es el caso de Kellen Moore anteriormente de Boise State, quien quizás era el mejor mariscal de campo y el tipo más elegante en la historia del fútbol americano universitario. Él ganó 50 partidos y solamente perdió tres. ¡La puntuación total de las tres derrotas se sumó a cinco puntos! Eso es increíble de veras, sin embargo muchos analistas y expertos no le hicieron mucho caso. Su razón fue que los calendarios de Boise State abarcaron demasiados opositores flacos.

Después de jugar en Boise State, los expertos le echaron otra acusación a Moore en cuanto a su porvenir de la NFL. Dijeron que es demasiado bajo y su fuerza de brazo no basta. Por desgracia, los equipos de la NFL creían eso también, y Moore no fue seleccionado en el sorteo de la NFL (del 2012). No obstante, Moore le interesó a un equipo y fue contratado como agente libre. Los Leones de Detroit le brindaron una oportunidad.

Seguramente más personas lo harán cuando él reanude a sumar más victorias a su marca 50-3.

Undefeated Marshall: The Bigger Picture

Contrary to what some College Football fans may think, there are currently two undefeated teams left: Florida State, and Marshall.

The Playoff Committee has released weekly top 25 rankings since the end of October, but until last week, non of these have included the University of Marshall. Boise State is listed at 23rd and Marshall is 24th in the latest rankings.

I get it: Marshall does have an easy schedule. I myself wouldn't put Marshall close to the top four at this point. But 10-0 didn't merit at least a top 25 ranking?

Since when does winning count as next to nothing for some teams? Why has College Football decided to make strength of schedule well over 50% of the equation, yet margin of victory is nearly irrelevant? Make it simple. Winning should be the biggest factor, but strength of schedule and school names complicate what should be a simple process of ranking teams.

From the perspective of non power five teams, Marshall's season is a manifestation that the committee has no trouble keeping a power five team far away from even having consideration for the playoff. However, compared to the BCS, this system is better overall because it guarantees a non power five team entrance into a major bowl game. As of now, two loss Boise State would get that automatic bid ahead of Marshall.

Moore is More for the Detroit Lions

In a perfect world, magnificent achievements would result in much greater respect and praise from others towards the person. Sometimes this praise doesn't come often enough.

Such is the case for former Boise State player Kellen Moore, that was perhaps the best QB and class act in the history of college football. He won 50 games and only lost three. The point total of the three losses added up to five points! That is truly incredible, but many analysts and experts didn't pay much attention to him. Their reason was that Boise State's schedules included too many weak opponents.

After playing at Boise State, the experts threw him another "accusation" relating to his NFL future. They said that he is too short and his arm strength isn't good enough. Most NFL teams thought the same thing, and Moore was not selected en the NFL Draft. Moore did interest one team enough, and was signed as a Free Agent. The Detroit Lions offered him an opportunity.

In each of the recent years, the Lions threatened Moore of being eliminated from the team. Through his effort and work, he has just reached the NFL for his third season. He is going to have many years more.

Why?

Because he is an example of reasons why nobody should judge solely based on appearance or first impressions. He has something that many QBs don't: The ability to stay composed in the pocket and know exactly what to do with the ball. In other words, he is basically a genius, and a genius deserves to be somewhere in the NFL. But that isn't all.

His last preseason performance showed that the doubts were inaccurate. It doesn't matter if he is "short," because he has shown that he can move the offense forward and score, and that is the goal of a QB. Furthermore, he actually can throw the ball pretty fast, far far and accurate. In fact, he could for years, but few paid attention.

They surely will when he continues his 50-3 record encore in the NFL~any day now as a starter.

¿BYU podrá salir del campo azul con triunfe? El aniversario de The Underscore

Hace un año escribí el primer escrito de The Underscore, y trató del partido de fútbol americano entre la Universidad de Brigham Young y la Universidad de Boise State. Escogí a que BYU ganara los dos partidos más recientes contro Boise State. Desde el 2012, la serie queda empatada a uno.

BYU (4-3) ha perdido sus tres últimos encuentros y tiene una derrota posible este viernes en contra de Boise State en su famoso campo azul. Antes conocido como Bronco Stadium, la capacidad de Albertson's Stadium excede a 30,000 aficionados.

Can BYU Come out of the Blue with a Win?: One Year Anniversary of the Underscore

A year ago I worked on the first Underscore post, and wrote it on the football game between Brigham Young University and Boise State University. I picked BYU to win the last two games against Boise State. Since 2012, the series is tied at one a piece.

BYU (4-3) is on a three game slide and faces a potential loss this Friday against Boise State (5-2) on its famous blue field. Formerly known as Bronco Stadium, Albertson's Stadium holds over 30,000 fans.

Christian Stewart has taken over BYU's offense for the injured Taysom Hill. Stewart has done well with BYU's offense, and BYU will be counting on him this week, especially since there's a chance running-back Jamaal Williams won't play.

Boise State has a new coach (Brian Harsin), but BYU will face the same Quarterback as last year (Grant Hedrick). The impressive thing about Hedrick is how well he recovered after having bad games. For instance, after turning the ball over several times at Air Force, and even getting benched, he lead the Broncos to a win on the road against the Nevada Wolf-pack (one of Boise State's rivals) the following week. BYU's last loss was by seven points at home vs Nevada.

Boise State recently lost its best receiver Matt Miller. They still have plenty of options, such as Thomas Sperbeck, who is also used to throw the ball on trick plays.

Boise State's best player is probably running-back Jay Ajayi. He ran for 151 yards last year in Provo (an average of 6.6 yards/carry).

So, in my honest opinion who wins?

While I prefer BYU wins, I give Boise State the victory by a score of 30-24.

Following this year, Boise State will have a lot of unknowns.

Sí, Chris Petersen se fue (a Washington), pero los Broncos aún parecen dispuesto por buen año. Entrenador Bryan Harsin estaba en Boise como coordinador ofensivo hace algunos años. Me imagino una gran ofensa, pero no superb. Mariscal de Campo (QB) Grant Hedrick será el último QB haber estado con Boise State a la misma vez de que Kellen Moore estuvo (2011). Hedrick entró en medio 2013 como titular mostró potencial. 

Corredor Jay Ajayi es probablemente la estrella del equipo, pero otros jugadores no están muy atrasados. Los Broncos de nuevo deberían de regresar una unidad sólida de receptores. Las preguntas del equipo tratan de las líneas ofensivas y defensivas. No obstante, parecen buenas estas posiciones.  Los apoyadores y secundaria están bastante completos, así la defensa depende de la actuación de los linieros.

Creo que Ole Miss tiene mucho potencial este año. De hecho, creo que el equipo podrá derrotar a LSU, Auburn o Alabama. No sospecho que ganará todo, sino que debe acabar con la temporada muy alto en los ranqueos/clasificaciones nacionales.

Los Broncos deben ganar, pero no creo que vaya a ser fácil, no obstante que es local.

En Connecticut
Será difícil viajar al este otra vez, especialmente si Boise realmente pierde contra Mississippi. Salen de Connecticut con victoria pareja.

Hay bastantes partidos para Boise que se tienta en mirar adelante, y este puede ser uno de éstos. ULL tiene a un mariscal de campo con experiencia, pero será difícil detener la ofensa de Boise State.

A Air Force le ha faltado el éxito en años recientes. Pueden mejorar un poco este año.

2014 Boise State Preview

Yes, gone is Chris Petersen (to Washington), but the Broncos should still be set for a pretty good year. Coach Bryan Harsin was at Boise a few years ago as Offensive Coordinator. I expect the offense to be great but not superb. Quarterback Grant Hedrick will be the last quarterback to have been at Boise State the same time Kellen Moore was. Hedrick stepped in mid 2013 as the starter and showed some potential.

Runningback Jay Ajayi is probably the star of the team, but other players aren't far behind. The Broncos again should form a solid wide receivers unit. The questions on the team are offensive and defensive lines; however, those positions look to be okay. The linebackers and secondary are pretty loaded, so the defense is depending on the performace of the linemen.

Why do preseason rankings?
Many people are against preseason rankings. Luckily, the official rankings from the committee don't begin until October. Rankings are interesting for many reasons, but mainly because they give a glimpse of what to expect. Comparing the final rankings with early rankings allows you to see who did or didn't live up to the hype, and what the surprise teams were. While it is usually tough to predict exact records, it is fairly simple to get a feel for how teams will be. Of my top 35 rankings from last year (added at the bottom), only three ended up under .500%. Obviously suspensions and injuries (Ex: Georgia 2013) are the biggest thorns to accurate preseason rankings.

¿Por qué hago clasificaciones de pretemporada?
Mucha gente están contra de las clasificaciones de pretemporada. Por suerte,  las clasificaciones oficiales del comité no empiezan hasta octubre. Las clasificaciones son interesantes por varias razones, mayormente porque te dan ojeada de las expectativas. Comparar las clasificaciones finales con las tempranas te permite ver a quien sí o no satisfizo toda la emoción y cuales equipos sorprendieron. Aunque generalmente es un reto predecir marcas exactas, es bastante sencillo percibir cómo desempeñarán los equipos. De mis clasificaciones de 35 equipos el año pasado (agregada al inferior), sólo tres finalizaron debajo de ,500%. Obviamente suspensiones y lesiones (ejemplo: Georgia 2013) son los espinos más grandes para clasificaciones precisas de la pretemporada.

Team Preview

• At Connecticut (Friday)- After a close loss as a favorite vs Virginia in the 2013 opener, BYU should be better prepared for another opener out east (again as a favorite). However, BYU's star running back Williams and receivers Blackmon and Kurtz will not play in this game.

W 20-17

• At Texas- Despite losing to BYU 41-20 in 2013, most expect Texas should beat BYU this year. While Texas could be much better, they've had a tumultuous off-season, so I think BYU can pull off another win.

• Vs Houston (Thursday)- The Cougars of Houston played a close game with BYU in 2013, losing by one. Houston will again be an offensive threat, but BYU looks better prepared to defend the pass.

The BCS is Out, a Playoff is in: Major Changes in College Football Approach

Florida State football's win over Auburn in this year's BCS Championship Game ended several streaks. The team is the first outside of the Southeastern Conference in eight years to win the BCS Championship. The second streak that ended is the BCS itself, or the Bowl Championship Series.

This system was put into place in the late 1990's, where the top two College Football teams at the end of the regular season were matched up for the BCS Championship Game, and eight qualifying teams would play in the other major Bowl Games (Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, Orange). The system usually created disaster at the end of the regular season, when well deserving teams were left out of the BCS.

Now, the one streak that is sure to continue is the constant change in College Sports. The post season is being changed, the NCAA is having legal issues that could lead to major changes (such as players getting paid) and teams have been shuffling conferences restlessly.

The New Postseason

The big news of 2014 is the new Post Season format. The College Football Playoff begins this season with the top four teams, selected by a committee instead of computers and voters. Will there be questions and disputes? Sure, but a tournament of four is two times better than a narrow two. A playoff would have solved problems in many, but not all, of the BCS years.

Some people think this system will make it even tougher for teams like Boise State to make the National Championship. We've yet to see, but I don't see a playoff of four teams leaving an undefeated Boise State team out three times (such as the BCS did in 2006, 2008, 2009)

Finally, the BCS had six conferences that were automatically qualified for a BCS game. Starting now there are five that qualify for a "Major Bowl." A sixth qualifier is chosen out of the best team out of all other conferences. There are more "Major Bowls" this year, where four of the six rotate as playoff games every year. These bowls are Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Peach Bowls. The Playoff Bowl Games this year are the Sugar and Rose Bowls. The National Championship Game will be at Cowboy's Stadium in Texas2.

 Conference Changes
 

The recent conference shifts first occurred in 2011, and included Nebraska's move to the Big Ten, Colorado and Utah's move to the PAC 12 and BYU's move to Independence. Conferences are almost unrecognizable now. The WAC and Big East are gone (Big East is now the American Athletic Conference) and the Big XII doesn't even have 12 teams.

This year, more teams are jumping ship, including Rutgers and Maryland (Big Ten), Louisville (ACC), etc.

Se va la BCS, llega torneo: El fútbol americano colegial cambia

La victoria de Florida State sobre Auburn en el Partido del Campeonato de BCS este año terminó varias rachas. Florida State es el primer fuera de la Conferencia Sudeste ganar el Campeonato BCS (Serie del Campeonato de Bowls/Tazones) en ocho años. La segunda racha que feneció abarca la BCS misma. 

Este sistema BCS se inició al fin de los años 90, cuando los dos mejores equipos de fútbol americano se aparejaron en el Partido del Campeonato de BCS, y ochos equipos clasificados jugaron en los demás grandes partidos de Bowl (Rosa, Azúcar, Fiesta, Naranja). El sistema usualmente creó un desastre al fin de la temporada regular, cuando equipos merecedores fueron dejados afuera de los Partidos de la BCS.

Ahora, la una racha que continuará seguramente es el cambio constante en deportes universitarios. La post/temporada (fin de la temporada regular) se cambia, la NCAA (Asociación Nacional de Atléticos Colegiales) pasa por dificultades legales que pueden resultar en cambios grandes (tales como pagos para jugadores) y equipos se han mezclado entre las conferencias inquietamente.

 La nueva post-temporada

Las novedades grandes de 2014 incluyen el sistema nuevo del fin de temporada. El College Football Playoff comienza esta temporada con los cuatro mejores equipos, seleccionados por un comité en vez de ordenadores y votantes. ¿Habrán preguntas y lides? Sí, pero torneo de cuatro equipos es dos veces mejor que angosto dos. Un torneo hubiera resuelto problemas en muchos, pero no todos, de los años con la BCS.

Algunas personas opinan que este sistema les pondrá más dificultades a equipos tales como Boise State para conseguir el Campeonato Nacional. Hemos de ver, pero no veo un torneo de cuatro equipos excluir tres veces a un Boise State invicto (como hizo la BCS en 2006, 2008, 2009).

Finalmente, la BCS se compuso de seis conferencias con acceso automático a partidos de BCS. Ahora, hay cinco conferencias que califican automáticamente para una Bowl grande. Sexto clasificador se escoge del mejor equipo de las demás conferencias. Hay más Bowls grandes este año, con cuatro de las seis que se intercambiarán sitios del torneo cada año. Estas Bowls incluyen: Rosa, Fiesta, Naranja, Azúcar, Algodón y Durazno. Este año los partidos del torneo consisten de Azúcar y Rosa. El Partido del Campeonato Nacional se ubicará en el Estadio de los Cowboys en Tejas1.

Cambios de Conferencias

Los primeros cambios recientes de las conferencias ocurrieron en 2011, incluso: Nebraska se trasladó a la Big Ten, Colorado y Utah a la PAC 12 y BYU a la Independencia. The Bronco Show

            Last season, the BYU Cougar’s Football Team took a trip in September to play against the Boise State Broncos on their famous (or infamous) Blue Field. In that game, neither offense could consistently pierce through their opponent’s tenacious defense. At the end of the contest, the Broncos pulled out the victory 7-6, with their only touchdown coming from an interception return by a defensive lineman.

            Bronco Mendenhall, BYU’s Coach, thinks that this encounter between the two teams will be a different kind of game 2; and he’s got good reasons to think so.

            Boise State has generally had a great offense, but last year the team had problems early on, as it was trying to replace Kellen Moore (Boise’s Quarterback 2008-2011, went 50-3 and broke the national record for wins. His three loses were a combined 5 points). Although their offense has been pretty good this year, it will have uncertainty due to the injury of Quarterback Joe Southwick last week against Nevada. Boise State’s Coach Chris Petersen will turn to Grant Hedrick (a Junior) as the starter against BYU. He runs very fast and showed last week against Nevada that he can also pass efficiently. After Southwick's exit, Hedrick headed his team to a 34-17 victory after having an early 17-7 deficit.

            Although BYU has a great receiver in Cody Hoffman, I think Boise State has better depth at the position. #11 Shane Williams-Rhodes is the team's fastest receiver, but #2 Matt Miller and #17 Geraldo Boldewijn are probably the team’s best receivers. Running back Jay Ajayi is the star of the team with 12 rushing touchdowns and an average of 5.7 yards a carry 3. 

For BYU, it's important to know that in last year’s game, QB Taysom Hill (now the starter) played only in the second half, but still led BYU’s offense to their only score of the night. Now that Hill is playing at home and has more experience, things should go much better for BYU’s offense.

           Although I hope BYU wins today in Provo, I support each team. Chris Petersen enters into his 100th game and is looking for his 90th win. He greatly respects BYU, and even justified many of the points that BYU's defense allowed against Houston 4.
           I just hope that each team does better than last year's game. I pick BYU 27- Boise State 24.

En ese partido, ningún de las ofensas podía consistentemente traspasar por la defensa tenaz de su opositor. En el fin de la competencia, los Broncos de Boise consiguieron la victoria 7-6, con su única anotación una intercepción devuelta por un linero defensivo.

Bronco Mendenhall, entrenador de BYU, piensa que este encuentro entre los dos equipos será un diferente tipo de partido 2. Tiene buena razón con eso.

Boise State generalmente ha tenido grandes ofensas, pero temprano en la temporada pasada el equipo tenía problemas, debido a que trataran de reemplazar a Kellen Moore  (El Mariscal de Campo/QB para Boise 2008-2011, 50-3 y batió la marca nacional de victorias, y sus tres pérdidas se sumaron a 5 puntos totales).             Aunque BYU Tiene a un gran receptor abierto en Cody Hoffman, creo que Boise State tiene mejor profundidad de jugadores en la posición. #11 Shane Williams-Rhodes es el receptor más rápido, mas #2 Matt Miller y #17 Geraldo Boldewijn probablemente son los mejores receptores del equipo. Corredor Jay Ajayi es la estrella del equipo con 12 anotaciones por tierra y un promedio de 5.7 yardas por cada acarreo 3.
            Concerniente a BYU, es importante saber que en el partido pasado, el Mariscal de Campo en respaldo Taysom Hill (Inicialista actual) solamente jugó en la segunda mitad, pero todavía dirigió a la ofensa a la única anotación de BYU de aquella noche. Ahora que Hill juega local esta vez y tiene más experiencia, todo debe mejorar para la ofensa de BYU.

            Aunque sí espero que BYU gane hoy en Provo, apoyo a cada equipo. Chris Petersen entra en partido número 100 y busca victoria número 90. Él respeta mucho a BYU, hasta justificar muchos de los puntos que permitió BYU contra Houston 4.
            Solo espero que cada equipo juegue mejor que su partido del año pasado. Predigo a BYU 27-Boise State 24.
