Undefeated Marshall: The Bigger Picture

Contrary to what some College Football fans may think, there are currently two undefeated teams left: Florida State, and Marshall.

The Playoff Committee has released weekly top 25 rankings since the end of October, but until last week, non of these have included the University of Marshall. Boise State is listed at 23rd and Marshall is 24th in the latest rankings.

I get it: Marshall does have an easy schedule. I myself wouldn't put Marshall close to the top four at this point. But 10-0 didn't merit at least a top 25 ranking?

Since when does winning count as next to nothing for some teams? Why has College Football decided to make strength of schedule well over 50% of the equation, yet margin of victory is nearly irrelevant? Make it simple. Winning should be the biggest factor, but strength of schedule and school names complicate what should be a simple process of ranking teams.

From the perspective of non power five teams, Marshall's season is a manifestation that the committee has no trouble keeping a power five team far away from even having consideration for the playoff. However, compared to the BCS, this system is better overall because it guarantees a non power five team entrance into a major bowl game. As of now, two loss Boise State would get that automatic bid ahead of Marshall.

Moore is More for the Detroit Lions

In a perfect world, magnificent achievements would result in much greater respect and praise from others towards the person. Sometimes this praise doesn't come often enough.

Such is the case for former Boise State player Kellen Moore, that was perhaps the best QB and class act in the history of college football. He won 50 games and only lost three. The point total of the three losses added up to five points! That is truly incredible, but many analysts and experts didn't pay much attention to him. Their reason was that Boise State's schedules included too many weak opponents.

After playing at Boise State, the experts threw him another "accusation" relating to his NFL future. They said that he is too short and his arm strength isn't good enough. Most NFL teams thought the same thing, and Moore was not selected en the NFL Draft. Moore did interest one team enough, and was signed as a Free Agent. The Detroit Lions offered him an opportunity.

In each of the recent years, the Lions threatened Moore of being eliminated from the team. Through his effort and work, he has just reached the NFL for his third season. He is going to have many years more.

Why?

Because he is an example of reasons why nobody should judge solely based on appearance or first impressions. He has something that many QBs don't: The ability to stay composed in the pocket and know exactly what to do with the ball. In other words, he is basically a genius, and a genius deserves to be somewhere in the NFL. But that isn't all.

His last preseason performance showed that the doubts were inaccurate. It doesn't matter if he is "short," because he has shown that he can move the offense forward and score, and that is the goal of a QB. Furthermore, he actually can throw the ball pretty fast, far far and accurate. In fact, he could for years, but few paid attention.

They surely will when he continues his 50-3 record encore in the NFL~any day now as a starter.

The San Francisco Giants Win Again

The Major League Baseball Playoffs have been remarkable this year. The San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals were both Wild Card teams, and met in the World Series.

The Royals opened the Playoffs with an extra-inning victory over the Athletics. They continued by rolling over the Tigers and Orioles.

The Giants also had a fairly simple road to the World Series, shutting out the Pirates and losing two games against the Cardinals and Nationals combined.

Momentum was continuously swayed between the Giants and Royals in the World Series. The Giants stole game one in Kansas City 7-1, but the Royals responded by winning the next two. The Giants blew out the Royals the next two games, and the Royals returned the favor to force game seven.

Both teams scored two runs in the second inning, but the Giants took the 3-2 lead in the fourth. Madison Bumgarner came in half way through the game and was clutch, pitching the rest of the game and allowing zero runs.

This marks the third time in five years that the Giants have won the World Series.
